Long Beach police confronted and shot a man walking the streets of Belmont Heights carrying a firearm early Wednesday morning (Tuesday night) — a man who turns out to be an off-duty Los Angeles police officer. That man is 26-year-old Jason Geggie of Long Beach. He remains in the hospital in critical but stable condition, having been shot twice, once in the arm and once in the torso, according to the Long Beach Police Department in an official statement released Wednesday. Geggie has been charged with exhibiting a firearm in the presence of a police officer in a threatening manner and exhibiting a firearm at any person in a threatening manner. Long Beach police received a call at 12:30 a.m. that a man was walking the streets carrying a firearm in the vicinity of Fourth Street and Termino Avenue, according to police reports. When officers arrived on the scene, the man was found on the 200 block of Mira Mar Avenue (just south of Broadway). Police were not releasing details of the interaction with the suspect, saying that the investigation is ongoing, according to Sgt. Dina Zapalski. She said that while a test of the blood alcohol level and for other drugs would be part of the hospital testing, she did not know the results. Geggie had been on the LAPD force for one-and-a-half years and is assigned to the central traffic division.ingguide.html"> |
