By Julian Bermudez Gazette Arts Writer Several new exhibits are opening around town in the next few weeks, which may be of particular interest for Long Beach residents. Given this summer’s not-so-hot soaring gas prices, residents might want to re-think vacationing abroad and just stay at home. By taking in local sites, especially the artistic ones, you may find yourself more relaxed and equally as cultured as you would from a trip to Europe. On view only from 7 to 10 p.m. this Friday, July 25, DDR Projects is hosting the “Walls & Foundations: Foundation Deck Party.” Featuring new designs by Kelly D. Williams, the exhibit presents works of art created for skateboards. “We are proud to play host to the Foundation Skateboard Release Party and Art Exhibit,” stated John Geldbach, DDR Projects owner. “This new line of skatedecks designed by Kelly will be on display for one night only, featuring new Team Series graphics as well as some of the professional riders on the Foundation Skate Team.” The event also offers goody bags, music, drinks and designer toys. I’m told everyone is welcome and that the event is sure to provide lots of good vibes. The following week, on Aug. 2, Gallery 33 East will present its opening reception for the latest “Group Exhibit.” Featured artists include Caryn Baumgarten, Lori LaMont, James de Boer, Richard Lopez, and Adam Normandin. According to the gallery, other artists will be added at a later date. The group exhibit will present paintings, sculpture and some new media creations. The public is strongly encouraged to attend the reception and meet the artists during the event. The exhibit ends Aug. 30. “Spirit Figures” from Barbara Wurden are currently on view at the Paradise Piano Bar and Restaurant. The artist expresses her talent through three creative disciplines: fine art, decorative painting and video. In this exhibit, Wurden expresses herself through her paintings. “Spirit Figures” is a collection of works representing powerful figures both fictional and real. Through her bold, painterly approach, the artist creates characters that are vivid and captivating. By imbuing a mystical essence, her characters convey a quiet, sensual strength. This is the first time for these works to be on view to the public. For more than a year now, Paradise has featured several local artists in hopes of encouraging and facilitating creativity. “We want to continue supporting the creative people who keep things original by creating art for our walls, for your eye candy, and for life,” states Piano’s web site. A reception is scheduled for at 7 p.m. Aug. 14. The exhibit ends Aug. 31. Long Beach residents and travelers alike have options for fun and interesting art experiences. Since “Staycations” are a rising trend amongst middle-class families, it’s a good thing that the city has a lot to offer without having to break the bank.
