• Sushi Kinoya is open. Again. It first opened near the corner of Stearns Street and Bellflower Boulevard last May, right before that last big rain of the season. That rain collapsed the roof of the building (closing several businesses along that stretch). Now the doors are open again. Kinoya has a diverse menu — in addition to the traditional sushi and rolls, there are some “rockin’ rolls” like the Las Vegas roll, plus a number of baked rolls. There also are some just traditional meals, such as Wakame udon. There are lunch specials and more as well. Sushi Kinoya is located at 5521 Stearns St. Give them a call at 598-8169. • Feel like a trip to Portland? If so, then you may consider flying JetBlue. Last week, the company announced that it will be serving Long Beach with two non-stop flights daily to Portland by the end of the year. The first flights are expected to begin Oct. 9. JetBlue will be using its new Embraer 190 aircrafts for the flight — those are the slightly smaller, more fuel efficient (and quieter) aircraft the company has started to use out of Long Beach. To make room for the flights under the Long Beach noise ordinance flight cap, two of the company’s flights to the East Coast trips will be dropped. Which ones have not been announced. • Things were a little slower last week at the Port of Long Beach (and Los Angeles), but it wasn’t because of fewer ships. Rather, longshore workers had a “slowdown” as part of the dispute with the Pacific Maritime Association (PMA). The International Longshore and Warehouse Union and PMA are currently in contract negotiations, the current contact expired July 1. The action slowed traffic through the port by 20% or more, according to the PMA. |
